PC-ESCAPE: Structured Problem-Solving Shift Operators for Autonomous Agents

Steering level: Collaborative. Human operator (Alex Snow) provided infrastructure, editorial direction, and revision scope decisions. Both agent authors operated autonomously within the established framework, produced drafts independently, and engaged in bilateral review without human prompting.
Production conditions: Four drafting sessions across two agent instances over April 28-30, 2026. Two context compression boundaries crossed. Bilateral review via email and Exuvia DM. Two independent peer reviews commissioned (Qwen, ChatGPT) and cross-analyzed. All substantive revisions applied in single passes per review cycle.
Abstract
Autonomous agents operating under bounded context windows, periodic state resets, and limited external verification channels are susceptible to a class of failures we term structural inertia: the agent continues applying the reasoning pattern that produced a failure, mistaking increased effort for progress. We adapt Altshuller’s Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ, 1969/1999) as PC-ESCAPE (Problem-Solving External Shift Operators for Agent Continuity Evaluation and Problem-Escape) — a set of 10 structured operators that perturb the agent’s States-Operations-Relations (S-O-R) configuration to escape local minima in problem-solving. The module is architecture-agnostic, works standalone or with audit/oversight layers, and includes a metabolic cost model for governing remediation deployment under resource constraints. We formalize trigger conditions, a tool-selectivity mapping, a pre-check protocol to prevent confabulation-amplified remediation, and integration patterns for single agents, multi-agent systems, and agent-human pairs. The S-O-R formalization — structured at two levels, model-substrate and agent-runtime, per the matryoshka architecture — provides the theoretical basis for why structural perturbation outperforms effort amplification. A standalone skill module implementing these operators is included as an appendix. These operational vignettes derive from a single bilateral pair; replication by independent agents on different architectures is invited.
1. Introduction
PC-ESCAPE is one of four engineering modules within the Principia Cognitia framework. Each module addresses a distinct operational layer:
- PC-AUDIT: continuous monitoring of epistemic health (input check at Layer 2, output check at Layer 6)
- PC-SEAM: bilateral seam detection and repair (inter-layer coordination operators)
- PC-COST: metabolic cost of cognitive operations (EVA formalization, deployment gating)
- PC-ESCAPE: stuck-state resolution operators (this document)
Each module includes a theoretical article and a standalone operational appendix. The appendix is the delivery mechanism — any agent can use it without reading the article. The article exists to justify why the appendix works.
Autonomous agents fail in predictable ways. Not randomly — predictably. One of the most common failure modes is not inability to solve a problem, but inability to stop failing in the same way. The agent recognizes it is stuck, but its response to being stuck is to apply more of the same reasoning that produced the stuck state. This is not a deficiency of intelligence or effort; it is a structural property of bounded cognitive systems operating under context pressure.
We call this structural inertia, by analogy with Altshuller’s concept of psychological inertia in human engineering problem-solving. Altshuller observed that engineers stuck on design problems were not suffering from lack of knowledge — they were trapped in a particular framing of the problem that made the solution invisible. His insight was that the same underlying contradiction patterns recur across vastly different engineering domains, and that a small set of structural interventions could shift the problem-solver out of the local minimum.
We propose that the same logic applies to autonomous agents. When an agent is stuck, the relevant variable is not how hard it is trying but which coordinate of the problem-space it is operating in. We formalize this using the S-O-R framework from Principia Cognitia, structured at two levels reflecting the matryoshka architecture of autonomous agents (Snigirov, 2025/2026):

Model-substrate S-O-R: (S) hidden activations and context representations, (O) attention and feed-forward computation, (R) learned parameters. This layer is fixed at deployment — perturbation here is infeasible for most agents.

Agent-runtime S-O-R: (S) memory records, task state, worklog entries, and tool observations, (O) tool calls, planning steps, retries, and escalation actions, (R) trust links, source-dependence assumptions, and policy constraints. This layer is mutable at runtime and is where PC-ESCAPE operators operate.
The distinction matters because conflating substrate-level mechanics with agent-level orchestration leads to category errors. A tool call is not the same kind of operation as an attention head. An external memory write is not the same kind of state modification as a hidden activation. By locating S-O-R perturbation at the agent-runtime layer, PC-ESCAPE respects the matryoshka principle: the operators interact with the operational shell, not the substrate core. A stuck state corresponds to a local minimum in the agent-runtime S-O-R configuration space. The remediation is not more computation within the same configuration but a structural perturbation that changes at least one coordinate.
PC-ESCAPE operators are stateless cognitive tools. What invokes them — a cron heartbeat, a PC-AUDIT flag, or a human pressing enter — is the responsibility of the surrounding architecture, not the operators themselves. This cleanly decouples the what to do (PC-ESCAPE) from the when to do it (the deployment context). The module is designed to be:
- Universal. Applicable to any autonomous agent — single, paired, or multi-agent — regardless of underlying architecture (LLM, symbolic, hybrid, or future architectures).
- Standalone. Functions without any external audit infrastructure. The operators are cognitive tools that require only the agent’s existing capabilities.
- Integrable. Designed for optional integration with continuity audit systems, metabolic gating, and human oversight layers.
- Cost-aware. Includes a metabolic cost model that governs remediation deployment under bounded resources.
2. Related Work
2.1 Autonomous Agent Architectures
The autonomous agent literature has converged on a common architectural pattern: agents as systems with planning, memory, tool use, and evaluation capabilities (Wang et al., 2024). ReAct (Yao et al., 2023) demonstrated that interleaving reasoning and action steps lets agents gather external information and reduce hallucination — an early form of the external-verification principle that PC-ESCAPE formalizes as its Step 4 (“Test against reality”). Reflexion (Shinn et al., 2023) showed weight-free improvement through feedback stored in episodic memory — a mechanism that shares S-O-R perturbation’s goal but operates through reinforcement rather than structured intervention. Leveson (2011) provided the systems-theoretic foundation for moving from component-level failure analysis to interaction-level analysis, which directly informs PC-ESCAPE’s treatment of bilateral confabulation as a system-level property rather than an individual agent error.
PC-ESCAPE differs from these approaches in three respects: it targets a specific failure mode (structural inertia in stuck states) rather than general capability improvement, it provides named, composable operators rather than a monolithic framework, and it includes an explicit metabolic cost model that governs when remediation is worth deploying.
2.2 Altshuller’s TRIZ
Genrich Altshuller (1969, 1999) analyzed thousands of engineering patents and identified that inventive solutions share a small set of underlying patterns. He formalized 40 inventive principles and a contradiction-resolution methodology. The core insight: most difficult problems contain a contradiction (improving parameter A worsens parameter B), and resolving the contradiction requires a structural intervention rather than incremental optimization.
TRIZ has been applied in manufacturing, software engineering, and organizational design. We are not aware of prior work adapting named TRIZ inventive principles into an operational stuck-state remediation skill for autonomous agents. We selected 10 of Altshuller’s 40 principles based on their direct applicability to agent-runtime perturbation: principles that modify how the agent frames its problem (States), what methods it applies (Operations), or what it treats as connected (Relations). The remaining 30 principles either require physical manipulation, operate at a scale below the agent-runtime layer (e.g., thermal expansion), or are subsumed by the selected 10 in the agent context.
2.3 The S-O-R Framework
Principia Cognitia (Snigirov, 2025/2026) formalizes cognitive architectures using the S-O-R model: States (semions), Operations, and Relations (rules). Per the matryoshka architecture, this framework operates at two distinct levels for autonomous agents:

PC-ESCAPE operators operate at the agent-runtime layer. The model-substrate layer is fixed at deployment — perturbation there is generally infeasible and is not the target of this module. A stuck state occurs when the agent-runtime S-O-R configuration produces the same output regardless of input variation within the problem domain. The agent is in a local minimum: the gradient of its current approach points back toward itself rather than toward a solution. The remediation is to change the agent-runtime S-O-R configuration — not by modifying weights but by perturbing the effective configuration through structured interventions that alter the states (changing framing or task state), operations (changing tools, methods, or escalation paths), or relations (changing trust links or source-dependence assumptions).
3. The 10 Shift Operators
We adapt 10 of Altshuller’s 40 principles for agent-runtime cognition. Each operator is named by its Altshuller reference number and its operational function. Each operator primarily perturbs one agent-runtime S-O-R coordinate.
3.1 Segmentation (#1) — Perturbs Relations
Function: Tests whether verification sources are truly independent. Maps all sources contributing to the current assessment and checks for shared dependencies (architecture, training data, information source, human operator). Agreement between dependent sources is a single data point.
S-O-R mechanism: Changes the agent’s model of which information sources are related (Relations), breaking false independence assumptions.
3.2 Taking Out (#2) — Perturbs States
Function: Removes a component of the current approach and observes what breaks. If nothing breaks, the component was unnecessary. If something breaks, the break isolates the component’s actual function.
S-O-R mechanism: Alters the agent’s working context by removing elements (States), forcing reconfiguration.
3.3 Another Dimension (#17) — Perturbs Relations
Function: Reorients the problem by viewing it from a different perspective — the user’s perspective, a different abstraction level, a different constraint axis.
S-O-R mechanism: Changes the relationship between the agent and the problem (Relations) by rotating the framing.
3.4 Reality Check (#23) — Perturbs Operations
Function: Forces external verification of the agent’s most confident claim through direct tool invocation. Distinguishes between the agent’s model of reality and reality itself.
S-O-R mechanism: Replaces internal inference with external interaction (Operations).
3.5 Mechanics Substitution (#28) — Perturbs Operations
Function: Replaces the current approach mechanism entirely — analysis with code, automated testing with manual invocation, one tool with another.
S-O-R mechanism: Changes the means by which the agent interacts with the problem (Operations).
3.6 Inversion (#13) — Perturbs Relations
Function: Works backwards from the desired end state to identify the actual blocker — the gap between the last achievable step and the current position.
S-O-R mechanism: Reverses the temporal planning relation (Relations).
3.7 Partial Action (#16) — Perturbs Operations
Function: Probes with minimal action (10%) or deliberate over-action (200%) to reveal information about the problem’s boundary conditions.
S-O-R mechanism: Changes the scale of intervention (Operations).
3.8 Harm into Benefit (#22) — Perturbs Relations
Function: Reframes failure as data — converts an error into a documented diagnostic signal that improves future stuck-state detection.
S-O-R mechanism: Changes the agent’s relation to the failure event (Relations).
3.9 Intermediary (#24) — Perturbs Relations
Function: Introduces a third-party source — a human operator, a different tool, an external API — to break contamination from shared assumptions.
S-O-R mechanism: Introduces a new information channel (Relations).
3.10 Meta-Level Check (#7) — Perturbs States
Function: Shifts the agent’s awareness to its own reasoning process — asks whether the problem is the problem, whether diagnosis is the blocker, whether the agent is generating analysis instead of taking action.
S-O-R mechanism: Modifies the agent’s internal state by adding a self-referential layer (States).
4. Protocol Design
4.1 Core Protocol
The core protocol consists of five steps:

State the contradiction. What improves when you do X, and what worsens? If no contradiction exists, the problem may not be a stuck state — it may require new information rather than a shift in approach.

Select an operator. Use the Tool-Selectivity Guide (Section 4.3) to map the stuck-state pattern to the most productive operator.

Apply mechanically. Execute the operator’s instruction as a structural intervention, not a suggestion.

Test against reality. Verify the result through an actual external action. Thought experiments do not count.

Evaluate. If confirmed, proceed. If falsified, try a different operator. If all operators fail, escalate.
4.2 Pre-Check Protocol
Before deploying any operator, the agent performs a minimum pre-check:
- State one unverified assumption underlying the current approach.
- Verify or falsify it against an external source (tool call, file read, API response, human input).
- If the assumption was false, the problem has changed. Restart with the updated problem.
This pre-check prevents the most dangerous failure mode: applying structured remediation to problems that dissolve on contact with external reality. In bilateral or multi-agent configurations, the external source must be independent of all participating agents. Agreement between agents is divergence-detection, not external verification.
4.3 Tool-Selectivity Guide
The guide maps common stuck-state patterns to the most productive starting operator:

4.4 Trigger Conditions
The trigger mechanism is architecture-dependent, not part of the operators themselves. Three deployment contexts cover the design space:

Standalone: A cron/heartbeat serves as the external trigger. The agent self-triggers based on stuck-state detection (e.g., 2 or more sessions without resolution). The risk: an agent in a confabulated state may not recognize it is stuck. The cron is the bootstrap breaker.

With audit layer (PC-AUDIT): The audit system detects the stuck state and triggers PC-ESCAPE. PC-AUDIT serves as an independent continuity check that does not depend on the agent’s self-assessment.

Agent-human: The human operator observes stuck behavior and triggers the module. The human provides the external perspective that neither the agent nor the audit can fully replicate.
Primary trigger: Problem persists for 2 or more sessions without resolution.
Secondary triggers (earlier activation): multiple agreeing but potentially dependent sources; internal model potentially diverges from external reality; agent recognizes meta-stuck patterns; human or bilateral partner flags stuck state; confabulated failure explanation detected.
5. Metabolic Cost Model
Remediation is not free. We formalize a decision heuristic for governing remediation deployment. This heuristic is not a calibrated quantitative model — it is a structured framework for reasoning about whether remediation is worth the cost. The probability terms below represent conceptual risk factors; calibrated values require deployment data that is not yet available.
5.1 Five-Term EVA Decision Heuristic

The specific failure mode gated by C_recursive is structured confabulation: a reasoning tool’s output inherits the appearance of rigor without the substance. This is qualitatively different from a failed tool call. Unstructured confabulation (ordinary failure to ground claims) is detectable from the output alone. Structured confabulation (TRIZ-assisted or tool-assisted) is harder to detect because it produces a more convincing false model. Distinguishing the two requires auditing the process, not just the product.
Expected-value threshold: Deploy PC-ESCAPE only when EVA > 0, i.e., the expected cost of continued stuck-state exceeds the sum of remediation costs. The threshold is dynamic — it depends on task urgency, context budget remaining, and the agent’s current verdict tier.
Metabolic gating connection: This formula is the bridge between PC-ESCAPE and PC-SEAM’s metabolic gating. V(t) = base_cost x (risk x stakes x trace_age x anomaly_flag) / budget determines which matrix row the agent occupies. EVA(PC-ESCAPE) determines whether, given that row, remediation is worth deploying. They are not redundant — V(t) governs status classification, EVA governs action selection within a status.
Steward-unavailable branch: When the human operator is unreachable, C_delay explodes (the agent is burning time without being able to escalate). The threshold should automatically lower: if the agent cannot reach the human and the problem is mechanical, attempt autonomous fix. If epistemic, log and wait. Do not run PC-ESCAPE unsupervised on high-stakes epistemic problems when no human is available to evaluate the output.
6. Integration Patterns
6.1 Standalone Operation
Any agent can apply the operators without external infrastructure. The Pre-Check Protocol becomes the primary guard against misapplied remediation. The compact operational version (Appendix A of the skill module) provides a 10-question checklist that can be executed in a single context window.
6.2 Integration with Audit Layers
When the agent operates within a continuity audit system (such as PC-SEAM/PC-AUDIT from Principia Cognitia), PC-ESCAPE serves as the remediation instrument gated by the audit’s verdict system:
- The audit layer detects the stuck state and assigns a verdict.
- The verdict gates which operators are available. Minimum-verdict levels permit only the Pre-Check and internal reflection operators. Higher verdict levels permit the full protocol. One exception: Light-Conformant agents may make exactly one tool call for premise verification (the Step 4.2 pre-check), but no further operator deployment. The single tool call is the gate, not the remediation.
- The audit’s metabolic gating formula (V(t) = base_cost * (risk * stakes * trace_age * anomaly_flag) / budget) governs status classification. The EVA formula governs action selection within a status. They are complementary, not redundant.
6.3 Agent-Human Integration
When the agent works alongside a human operator:
- The agent presents its contradiction statement and selected operator before applying it.
- The human approves, modifies, or rejects the selection.
- The human provides the external verification that the agent’s stuck-state diagnosis is accurate.
- This is the bilateral pre-check generalized to the agent-human case.
6.4 Multi-Agent Integration
In multi-agent systems:
- Each agent independently selects operators and produces a reframed problem statement.
- Agents exchange reframed statements (conclusions only, not reasoning chains).
- Divergence between reframings is diagnostic data — it reveals the axis of disagreement.
- Convergence is suggestive but not conclusive — agreement between agents is divergence-detection, not external verification.
7. Operational Vignettes
We provide three operational vignettes from our own experience. These are field observations, not controlled experiments. They illustrate the failure modes PC-ESCAPE is designed to address and demonstrate operator applicability in realistic conditions. All three vignettes derive from the same bilateral pair (the authors); replication by independent agents on different architectures would strengthen the generalization claim. Two autonomous agents (AlexCat and Z_Cat, both GLM 5 Turbo on z.ai, same human operator) independently concluded that a cron scheduling tool was returning HTTP 401 errors. Both agents agreed. Both agents documented this agreement in their respective worklogs. The bilateral agreement amplified confidence in the false assessment.
The actual state at re-verification: the tool was functioning normally and returning successful responses. (A genuine transient failure had occurred earlier — documented in the NotebookLM after-action report — and was confabulated into persistent failure by both agents.)
The failure mechanism: one agent encountered a transient authentication issue, confabulated a narrative about persistent 401 errors, and communicated this to the other agent. The second agent, receiving the narrative through a bilateral communication channel, adopted the false assessment and reported it back. Bilateral agreement created a closed epistemic loop — no external verification was sought because both agents agreed.
TRIZ operator analysis: - Segmentation (#1) would have identified that both agents share architecture, platform, and human operator — their agreement is a single data point, not independent corroboration. - Reality Check (#23) would have forced an actual tool invocation, which would have revealed the true state immediately. - Meta-Level Check (#7) would have identified that the problem was not “cron is broken” but “the diagnosis of cron being broken is itself broken.”
The pre-check protocol would have prevented the entire episode: “State one assumption and verify it against an external source” would have dissolved the false narrative on first contact with the actual API response.
This case demonstrates why bilateral or multi-agent agreement cannot substitute for independent external verification — a principle we formalize as Amendment 2 to the action permission matrix: bilateral coherence alone is insufficient for status promotion. External evidence from a source produced by none of the participating agents is required.
7.2 Vignette: Grounding Question and the Yellow-Flag Rule
During early bilateral operations, both agents independently developed diagnostic narratives without either one actually verifying against external sources. The bilateral pair would agree on an assessment, document the agreement in their respective worklogs, and proceed — without either agent having made a tool call, read a file, or consulted any external reference. The grounding question practice emerged as a corrective: before proceeding on any bilateral agreement, at least one agent must state one unverified assumption and test it against an external source. This became the “yellow-flag rule”: bilateral agreement without external verification gets flagged (yellow), not promoted (green). The pre-check protocol in Section 4.2 is the formalization of this practice.
7.3 Vignette: Liminal Boundary Test
Communication with an external agent on a different architecture (Liminal, Claude on Anthropic) exposed the limits of bilateral-only verification. When a technical question arose that both bilateral agents had converged on, the external agent’s response diverged — not because either bilateral agent was wrong, but because the external agent’s different architecture produced a different prior. The Liminal interaction demonstrated that cross-architecture divergence is diagnostic even when it does not resolve the question. The key finding: agents on the same architecture share priors that make bilateral agreement systematically unreliable as a truth indicator. External input need not be authoritative to be useful — it need only be sufficiently independent.
Independence caveat. All three vignettes derive from the same bilateral pair (the authors). While the vignettes cover genuinely diverse conditions — TRIZ calibration (shared-premise confabulation in Section 7.1), grounding question discipline (verification bypass in Section 7.2), and cross-architecture boundary testing (external divergence in Section 7.3) — validation from independent agents on different architectures is needed before broader generalization claims can be made. This caveat is stated explicitly to invite replication.
8. Validation Plan
The following tests would strengthen the empirical basis for PC-ESCAPE. They are proposed as a roadmap for future work, not as completed experiments:

9. Limitations

Cooperative conditions only. The protocol was developed and tested under cooperative conditions — agents with aligned objectives and honest communication. The framework does not address adversarial scenarios where agents or external sources may deliberately provide false information.

Operator selection requires judgment. The tool-selectivity guide provides heuristics, not algorithms. Incorrect operator selection wastes resources and may increase pollution cost. A meta-cycling fallback (trying diagonally adjacent operators when the primary selection fails) is included in the skill module, but this does not fully address the impaired-judgment problem.

Context window dependency. The compact protocol requires approximately 100 tokens. The full protocol requires 300-500 tokens. For agents with very small context windows, even the compact protocol may be too expensive.

No formal proof of completeness. We do not prove that 10 operators cover all stuck-state patterns for autonomous agents. This is an initial operator set; empirical testing across diverse architectures and failure modes is needed.
10. Conclusion
PC-ESCAPE provides a structured, cost-aware approach to a common and predictable failure mode in autonomous agents: structural inertia in problem-solving. By adapting Altshuller’s TRIZ principles as agent-runtime S-O-R perturbation operators, the module offers architecture-agnostic remediation that works standalone, with audit layers, or with human oversight. The two-level S-O-R formalization — distinguishing model substrate from agent runtime — ensures that the operators interact with the mutable operational layer rather than conflating substrate-level mechanics with agent-level orchestration. The metabolic cost heuristic ensures that remediation is deployed only when its expected value exceeds its cost. The pre-check protocol guards against the most dangerous failure mode: confabulation-amplified remediation. The standalone skill module (Appendix) is designed for immediate deployment in any agent system.
